Overview

Committed to music education, BCJazz’s programs engage young people with concerts, music lessons, workshops, master classes, performance opportunities, mentorships, internships, and support to pursue college.

BCJazz hallmarks include innovative music instruction, challenging material, a low student to teacher ratio, an emphasis on close listening to the masters and each other, and access to BCJazz’s broad network of music professionals, performing artists and educators who inspire, coach and challenge students to master their instruments.

Our year-round programs strive to expand young people’s musical knowledge, teach the beauty of collaboration and improvisation, encourage imaginative thinking and creativity, while teaching the values jazz represents: teamwork, respect, and freedom with responsibility.

BCJazz engages the creative spirit of young musicians, encourages self-expression, and fosters the joy of accomplishment that comes with the experience of playing music with others.

Students learn to think on their feet, instilling confidence and courage, as they experience the beauty of great art.

Instructed by our faculty of jazz masters, music professionals, and university music professors, who teach at the highest level of excellence, our programs are held on the campus of the University of Bridgeport.

BackCountry Jazz’s education programs are provided free of charge, with emphasis on serving economically disadvantaged public school students.

BCJazz Summer Program

A four-week full day jazz immersion experience for Bridgeport area students, ages 10-20. Our summer program offers instruction in

composition and improvisation; ensemble teamwork on brass, woodwind, string, and percussion instruments; and vocal skills training. Instrumental and vocal students receive instruction to develop key skills and enhance knowledge in the fundamentals of music, emphasizing listening

skills, and the art of performance. Highlights include workshops, masterclasses, small group ensembles, jam sessions, and individual instruction. Our free Nutritious Meals Program provides lunch for all.

The BackCountry Jazz BeBoppers

The BCJazz BeBoppers is an ensemble of our advanced students who perform together year-round. Having gained local popularity as an in-demand performing group, they play at local festivals, events, churches, and venues in and surrounding Fairfield County.

After School Jazz Workshops

Students receive individual lessons and group workshops every Friday, throughout the academic year. Students participate to elevate their musicianship through an emphasis on teamwork, creativity, and self-expression.

In School Concerts and Workshops

The entry point to our educational programs, elementary, middle, and high school students are introduced to BCJazz through our in-school concerts in Bridgeport public schools. Shows feature a mix of performers, including those on trumpet, tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and vocals. This program introduces students to Jazz, helping them to develop an understanding of and appreciation for jazz music.

Young People’s Concerts

A live concert experience for students in a theater setting.

The program teaches young people about Jazz through the performance of the works of iconic jazz masters as well as new compositions. Works by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Thelonious Monk have been featured in past concerts. Led by Bennie Wallace, with internationally renowned jazz artists, these concerts create a first awareness and exposure to jazz music.

Through our experience, we have learned that jazz is unique in that its excitement and spontaneity engage young people on a non-intellectual, emotional level without the need for explanation. This makes them more receptive to verbal interaction.

These concerts have been a key tool in recruiting students into our education programs and strives to share the positive aspects of Jazz with young people who would not otherwise have opportunities to learn about this great national treasure.

Internship and Apprentice Program

BCJazz alums return to our programs after graduating high school to work with students as hired interns and apprentices during our summer music camp. Alums assist BCJazz faculty in teaching workshops and classes, as well as learning arts administration basics.

Instrument Program

Owning an instrument gives students a profound sense of pride and accomplishment. Through this program, professional level instruments are awarded to students who demonstrate talent and commitment to music.

BCJazz also aids with instrument supplies, maintenance costs and more to ensure students have what they need to continue to pursue and increase their studies in music.

Mentorship Program

Designed for our most highly motivated students and BCJazz alums, mentees are paired with prominent working professionals to reinforce their passion for learning, ensuring their continued creative input and musical growth.
